How random!

Reactions:
Last night we went to Red Robin to start the Maddie birthday celebration (yea, I know it's not until next week)

Anyway we sit down at the table and I hear my name and who should be sitting next to us but Maddie's best friend from preschool and her mom. Caitlin moved away to California last summer and they were both devastated. Dawn emailed me before and told me that they were coming up sometime this summer but she never gave me any dates. The girls were so excited. They're coming over Thursday morning to play. It was just a weird random coincidence.

More camping lessons

Reactions:
I thought of some more lessons I should have added...

1. Mosquitoes LOVE me. I have over 15 bites on my body and they're not just little bites, they're BIG bites and they itch. Still. Like hell.
2. A table top lamp does not make a good flashlight in the middle of the night.
3. It is more than likely that Rachel and I camped simultaneously at Elkhorn many times growing up. We could have been best friends our whole lives if either of us were just a little more outgoing.
4. Camping with another family is so much more fun than camping with just your family.
5. We should have packed more games.
6. We could have packed a little less food. (notice I said "could" have, not "should" have).
7. When our girls fear danger for their brothers, they become very worried.
8. Walkie talkies are not always the best mode of communication especially when the only words you hear are "think.....saw.....cougar"
9. Even though we brought the DVD player, they only used it for maybe 10 minutes, which was an awesome thing.
10. There is nothing that feels better than a little water on your face and clean teeth first thing in the morning.

Camping roundup

Reactions:
You know you've been dying to hear all about the Rogers/Snelson campout. If you're on Facebook, you've seen the pictures probably. If not.......well you get to see them now.

Well, we showed up at the campsite and there was just a teensy little problem. It was a little misrepresented on the website. It was a little (a lot) smaller than we had anticipated and it was supposed to be "full sun", which is odd since there was "full shade". No biggie though, we ended up being able to squeeze into that site without a problem. It was cozy, but that's just fine. The boys slept in their own tent and the girls each slept in their parents tent. Originally they had wanted to sleep together, but I thought it best if Maddie slept with us since she's not a good sleeper (I was correct in making this decision, by the way...she proved that later).

We took the kids to the river and they threw in rocks (lots of them). They got a little wet too. We went back and made some S'mores and popcorn and hung out for awhile. The kids didn't get to bed until after 10:00. The grownups not until after midnight. I let Maddie sleep on the air mattress with Joel so that she would sleep better, but it didn't work. She kept falling off and she'd wake up crying and once I even had to walk her all the way to the outhouse in the middle of the night (argh). I got maybe 30-60 minutes of combined sleep all night long. It sucked. Plus I was freezing because the zipper was stuck on the sleeping bag so I couldn't quite get it zipped up all the way. The next night I put her on the ground and she slept all night. Go figure.

The next day we went to the waterfall. I think the grownups were more impressed with the waterfall than the kids. The boys would rather explore and the girls were looking for lady bugs. We took the kids down to the river after that and let them get as wet as they wanted, which they loved.

We had a really good time. The kids were really good and got along great. The boys were pretty much inseparable and the girls only fought towards the end when they were ready to go and were exhausted. I'd love to go back soon. We had a blast. We already have some sites (bigger sites) picked out that interested us.

Thank you Snelsons for a great weekend. All four of us had one of the best weekends we've ever had and I am so grateful we got to spend it with you guys.

We've learned some great lessons:
1. Dont' forget the hamburgers.
2. Brinnon has a liquor store.
3. Rachel needs to remember to charge her camera.
4. Always scout out the campsite, never trust the website.
5. Bring spray for the outhouse, cause it stinks.
6. If you're going to barbeque, bring a spatula.
7. Joel and Rachel are cribbage cheaters.
8. Dennis has a gas problem.
9. Two 11yo boys in a tent alone is a messy, disgusting thing.
10. I can fall flat on my face in a tent and nobody in a 10 foot radius can hear me. Either I'm a graceful faller or they're deaf.
11. Two 11yo boys are like moths to a flame when there is fire around (pun intended) and they can't keep their sticks out of it.

I uploaded all the pics to Facebook. You should be able to see them by clicking this link, even if you're not a facebook user.

Did you see the pigs flying?

Reactions:
I'm going camping today and I'm actually looking forward to it. Yes, hell has frozen over.

We're going with the Snelsons who are some of my favorite people in the world. I got up at the crack of dawn today to get supplies and now it is time to pack. I'm hoping to somehow get some cleaning done today before i go too because as soon as I get home on Sunday I have to work an 8 hour shift (yikes) and there will be a ton of crap to put away so a messy house on top of that will make me sick.

Hopefully I won't forget to bring my camera.

Hopefully the extreme garlic aroma drifting off Joel and Dylan will go away sometime today so we don't choke to death in the tent (they ate garlic fries at the Mariner game yesterday)

Hopefully I won't forget anything.

Hopefully Maddie will sleep good and I won't have to haul her to the bathroom at 2:00 in the morning.

Hopefully it won't rain (it's looking good on that one)

To Mourn or Not to Mourn...that is the question.

Reactions:
Today America lost two huge icons...Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

The loss of Farrah Fawcett, although expected, is still devastating. I cried like a baby watching the tribute for her on TV today. I cried for her family. I cried for all the suffering she endured. She was a beautiful woman who will truly be missed. She fought cancer like a trooper and she didn't give up without a fight.

I have mixed feelings about the loss of Michael Jackson. While his music will forever be a major part of everyone's lives, and no one, not one single person can deny that Michael Jackson music had a huge influence on American pop culture, it is easy to say that we as an American public have been mourning the loss of that for many years already. As for the man that he became, I am hard pressed to shed any tears for him. While he was never convicted of his crimes - and really with someone of his influence, power and money, can you really expect that (hello, OJ?) - one still can make assumptions. I personally have absolutely no tolerance for child molesters, especially ones who pay off the alleged victims. The Michael Jackson I mourn for today is for the man he was.

Movie Review

Reactions:
Joel and I watched this the other night. We were skeptical because we've really struggled to find movies we found interesting or even worth finishing, but this movie is well worth 2 hours of your time.

The story of Fuzzy

Reactions:
Fuzzy was a caterpillar. Fuzzy was chilling out under the trampoline making the 3 day journey across the great shaded area to visit some relatives when a giant girl named Maddie spotted her and picked her up and named her Fuzzy. After playing with Fuzzy and probably frightening her to death, she created a home for her with grass in a jar and after much insistence on her mother's part, she left it in the garage. She insisted that Fuzzy would someday become a beautiful butterfly and she was going to watch this happen, even if she had to keep her in the garage.

The next morning Maddie shot out of the house like a dart first thing in the morning. Her mother braced herself to hear the sad news of Fuzzy's demise, because surely a caterpillar could not survive in a jar in the garage. Much to her suprise, Fuzzy had fulfilled Maddie's wish and turned herself into a cocoon in the home that Maddie had created for her. Now, every 5 minutes Maddie checks on the cocoon waiting to see the butterfly emerge.

This story is to be continued.

Lost in a sea of Benadryl

Reactions:
Maddie developed a strange allergic reaction to something and I have no idea what it is or was. She started out with what looked like several bug bites but have spread into a hives like reaction on her stomach and back and legs. Unfortunately, it itched like crazy too.

Which means I had to give her some Benadryl. Straight Benadryl during the day means Maddie turns into a 2-year-old again. Whining. Crying. Throwing fits. Speaking gibberish. I'm not kidding either. She's spent so much time in her room today for the above mentioned crimes that I figure she may just crash there, but unfortunately straight Benadryl does not cause my daughter to be sleepy, just 2.

Already the rash/hives/bites or whatever it was is already going away, so at least my migraine will not have been in vain.

Paying my dues

Reactions:
I've now been tagged twice this week with two different tasks. Once by Michelle with an Honesty Award. I need to post 10 truths about myself. Also earlier this week by Miss Kelly Kelly with 6 unimportant things that make me happy. So here are my things....

10 Things About Karla

  1. I really do love to cook for my family. I hate to bake though. Refridgerated cookie dough was made for me. Until it was recalled anyway.
  2. I don't really like pork products much. I hate ham and sausage. Bacon is okay, but I'd rather not eat it. Pork chops are fine, as long as I made them. Pork roast I do like, but again, only if I made it.
  3. I'm a bit obsessive (ya think?). If I love something, I love it ALOT. It's both a good and bad trait of mine.
  4. My son is so much like me that it is scary at times.
  5. Maddie is so much like Joel that it scares Joel at times.
  6. I don't mind doing laundry - in fact I actually do it every day.
  7. My car is a disaster. It always is. I clean it once a month or so and it goes right back to being a disaster again. It's like a mess magnet.
  8. When Joel and I are hanging out alone together, it's one of my favorite times.
  9. I have really big feet. They've only gotten bigger now thanks to my children, God love them. This is why I am not a shoe fanatic because if I were, I'd have the worlds ugliest shoe collection on the planet.
  10. I love playing softball even though it is at times the most frustrating and physically and mentally self-torturous thing I do.
6 Unimportant Things I Love
  1. My slippers. I've worn them to the store on accident.
  2. Reading stories that Dylan writes.
  3. When Maddie cleans up her toys without being asked.
  4. Winning a game of cribbage.
  5. Spending time with Rachel, even if it's just our daily emails.
  6. Finding more cash in my wallet than I thought was there.
There, now you can consider yourself a Karla-expert.

It's Friday night and I just spent all day cleaning the house and this is the most effort you're going to get from me. So I'm not going to tag anyone. If you haven't done one of these, consider yourself tagged :)

Ain't gonna play no more no more

Reactions:
Dylan's team lost their game tonight to Dairy Queen, so the season is over. It's bittersweet. I'm a little tired of going to the field every single day, but the kids played really hard and really wanted it. Maybe next year boys :)

Dylan had quite a fan club there, not only was it the regular family crew and Jay, we had Jared Smith and Joel's cousin Nikki and her mom and her daughters, so that was cool. It was nice to see everyone.

I think the person who is most upset about the end of the season is Maddie. She will definitely be missing her social hour.

Sorry Dan and Rachel, I know you wanted to end your season tonight, but what are you gonna do?

Fickle pickle

Reactions:
Here's a little factoid to start your day. Maddie gained 10 pounds since September.

Here's another one: Men are 6 times more likely to be struck by lightening than woman. "Well, it ain't raining."

Anyway, nothing special. Going to the game tonight of course. First we have to get through our first official summer break day. So far not so bad. Dylan had some friends over and they were jumping on the trampoline together and he comes in for some paper towels because they were having a "First Blood" wrestling match and whoever draws first blood wins. I would have stopped it, but I didn't feel like it. I told them I didn't want to hear any crying. Dylan won, by the way, but it was because he ripped someones scab off. That reminds me that he needs to go disinfect the trampoline. and himself.

Dylan game update

Reactions:
Yes, Dylan played yet another game tonight. They played T&C Photo and they won 11-7. It was tight and a little bit nerve wracking. Dylan hit a bomb to right field that got caught. He made some good plays at 2nd base.

Now we play Dairy Queen tomorrow, which as many of you already know, is Dennis' team, which is my best friend Rachel's son's team. I was really hoping this game would not happen where one of our kids will have to eliminate the other, but oh well. Dairy Queen has beat us 3 times already so if they beat us tomorrow it really won't be much of a shocker for anyone.

The best part about tomorrow is that I get to see Rachel again :P oh yea, and Maddie and Marin will be together again, because parting really is such sorrow in their world....trust me.

Videos

Reactions:
I uploaded some of Dylan's baseball videos to YouTube, so you get the viewing pleasure of watching the same excitement we did :)

In this one, he hits the ball to the 2nd baseman who gets the kid running to 2nd out, then the kid overthrows it to home and the catcher is crawling around on the ground. All the while Dylan could have been to at least 2nd base but he's just hanging around 1st base chatting with the coach...lol

Here's Dylan hitting off one of his best friends, Reilly. It was an awesome hit.

Here's Dylan pitching, he put the runner out. It was a good play by him.

Here's my favorite. He strikes this kid out 1, 2, 3, and he never even swung the bat. WOO

Ryan Star Widget

Reactions:
Now is the time for me to brag about another member of the male species who makes me proud...(but not in the same way of course)...RYAN STAR. His EP Last Train Home was released today and has 4 songs off the upcoming album and two videos and it's only $4. It's fast rising on the Itunes chart too...so go buy it and make me proud of YOU. It's worth it, trust me.

Hey, remember yesterday?

Reactions:
Remember my post yesterday and the day before bragging about how great Dylan did both pitching and hitting and defensively in baseball???

Well forget I ever said anything. Everything he did in the last few days was nothing in comparison to what he did today.

He pitched an ENTIRE game and he only walked one kid. The game was 19-6. Dylan went 3 for 3. He was in the ZONE.

He's surpassed the rock star status. He's the golden child.

What I'd like to know is where this kid was at the beginning of the season??

Dylan the Baseball Rock Star Part Dos

Reactions:
Today was the 2nd game of Dylan's tournament. Bad News: They lost. Good News: They played hard. Good News number 2: Dylan did awesome again. He didn't pitch today, but he got some pretty awesome hits. The boy is going to develop an ego the size of Washington State if this keeps up.

Since they lost, they have to play tomorrow. If they lose tomorrow, they're done. If they win, they play Wednesday. Always an adventure.

When Dylan gets a hit, he earns a trip to DQ for ice cream. He got a great hit yesterday and earned DQ but we didn't go. After the rockin' hits he got today, he earned Coldstone Creamery! Yay for us, I mean him. :P

My boy is a rock star

Reactions:
Dylan played his first tournament game today. He was a rock star. He got a double and a single and a bunt. He got the chance to pitch and he had a lot of pressure on him because due to unmentioned issues, they were now down to only 8 players so they only had 2 outfielders. Any one good hit to the outfield could be the end of the game.

Dylan stepped up and rocked the mound in a huge way. He struck out the first two batters with only 6 pitches. He struck out the last batter as well pitching an amazing 10 STRAIGHT strikes. He's an amazing kid. The mama in me is so incredibly proud. I don't even have words to describe the pride I have right now.

Kindergarten graduation day

Reactions:
First, a picture of my safety patrolman doing his duties for almost the last time. He's a little unhappy about me taking pics.

My Kindergarten Graduate.

Maddie's class with their Graduation Cake.
Isn't she beautiful?
Maddie and some of her friends.

Today Maddie had her end of Kindergarten Picnic/graduation. They had a cake and got diplomas, and got to play with their friends. They still have 2 more days of school left so this was mostly for the parents.

Ralph, meet John.

Reactions:
Dylan had a great time at Wild Waves. He said they went on ALL the water slides that were open (some were closed).

He came home and got settled in and changed his clothes.

Then dinnertime came. He wasn't eating. He said he didn't feel good all of the sudden. Joel was getting angry with him for not eating. I told him to go lay down and I'd reheat his dinner later when he felt better, which earned a glare from Joel.

Dylan barely got to the top of the stairs before he started hurling all over, which earned a return glare from me to Joel.

So he's puking now. How fun. I can tell you why too....

How much water did he drink today? None.

How much chlorine did he swallow today? Mucho, I'm sure.

How much candy did he eat today? I can only cringe at the thought.

How much soda did he drink today? This is Dylan, so take a wild guess....

Anyway you look at it, the mathematic equation consistently adds up to vomit.

Splish Splash

Reactions:
Click here to see where Dylan is today.

I'll admit, I'm jealous. He went there with the Safety Patrol group as an end of the year celebration, so it's just them and the rest of the 5th grade had to stay home. So did mom. They didn't have chaperones other than the two safety patrol instructors. It's a shame cause I would have gladly chaperoned this party.

Things are about to go crazy

Reactions:
Dylan's baseball tournament starts this weekend and goes for a whole week. They play a minimum of 2 games. Best case scenario, they play 5 games in 8 days. Worst case scenario, they play 7 games in 8 days. Last year that's what happened and the kids were exhausted, which is why we got creamed in the championship. It's a crap shoot with Dylan's team. Sometimes they play really well and kick ass, but other times they just lay down and let the other team stomp on them. We'll see which of his teams shows up this week. Dylan's momentum has really picked up so hopefully he'll continue to do really well.

Bleh

Reactions:
I don't have anything interesting to say today. or yesterday. or the day before. Things are busy in a boring sort of way.

I have no good books to read which is killing me. I finished a pretty good one yesterday and started a new one, but I can't enjoy it. I can't possibly read the Twilight series again. I mean, yea I could, but really, should I? Probably not. I am thinking of reading My Sister's Keeper again since the movie comes out soon but I think I probably won't. I really hate "rereading" books and the Twilight series two times is about the most I can handle.

My life is an exciting adventure when I can type a whole paragraph just contemplating books.

Swing for the fence

Reactions:
Dylan's home from camp!! YAY. He said he missed us, but he wasn't homesick. That's good. We missed him too but we weren't Dylan-sick (haha).

He had his last regular season game last night against one of his best friends. He hit that ball clear to the fence. He was looking at an easy triple, maybe even an in the park home run if he hadn't have missed first base. Luckily he was paying attention to the screaming of the coaches to go back to first so he wasn't out. When he stole home he got tackled by a much bigger kid, but thankfully Dylan is a tough kid and he was fine.

Today he went to the Mariner game with Joel. Maddie went Garage Sale-ing with Grandma and Auntie Lea. Later I'll bring her to Mam's to spend the night, which gives Mama quite a bit of alone time today. What to do, what to do....

So Ordinary

Reactions:
Dylan comes home today!! I bet he had a blast. I can't wait to hear about it. I sent a camera with it so hopefully he took pictures.

The temperature has dropped a lot. It's been in the upper 80s to 90 for a few days and while it doesn't bother me, it turns Joel into a grump. Maybe it's because he has to work in it, I don't know. His allergies are horrible right now too, which doesn't help.

Maddie went to bed late last night because it was so hot and she didn't sleep well again so I'm hoping for some better sleeping situations with the cooler temps.

Dylan has his last game of the regular season tonight at 7:30. The tournament starts soon, although I don't have a schedule yet.

So I hope you enjoyed the most boring blog post in the world. I actually don't have anything of interest to say today. Maybe it's the lack of sleep or maybe the heat melted my brain, I don't know, either way I'm going to go vegetate on the couch and watch some Fairly Oddparents with Maddie, because that is sure to stimulate the brain matter.

Hot stuff

Reactions:
First, it's my nephew Patrick's 10th Birthday today!! It totally snuck up on me. I can't believe he's 10 already! Happy birthday little man!

So as you remember, Dylan is gone. I'm sure he is having a blast. I do miss him, but I thought it would be weird not having him around; however, when he is home, he is usually out playing with his friends or up in his room playing video games - we hardly ever see him anyway unless he's hungry.

Last night we grilled some steaks and to quote Maddie, it was "the best steak in the whole world." Joel had a softball game last night and since it was so hot he was pretty reluctant to go, but his allergies were bothering him so much that he decided it was probably a good idea to go. I know that sounds weird, but his allergies are always worst at home. I had to keep the books at his game last night. I actually really enjoy doing that, but since I only had Maddie and not Dylan I was afraid I would get distracted and not keep an accurate book. Maddie found some girls to play with and I didn't have to worry about her at all and I kept perfect books.

Today is the very last day of super hot weather, which is bittersweet. I actually enjoy the heat, but don't tell Joel that. He says "you don't work out in it all day so you don't get to say one way or another."

One, Two, Three strikes, you're out

Reactions:
Last night Dylan played so awesome. He was starting pitcher and he pitched for 3 innings and struck out a number of guys. He only walked 2 of them. He even got a hit last night. Here are some pictures of him pitching.

This is what he looked like after pitching. He was soaked with sweat (it was in the mid-80s at that time) and he was exhausted. He pitched about 50 pitches, which is amazing.

This is Maddie and her friend Olivia and her new friend Jessie during the game playing in the dirt. She's so social, we hardly ever even see her during the games. That's her social hour.

Here's a video of him striking out a kid 1-2-3. It's pretty awesome. He had an entire inning like that.

Dylan leaves for Fort Flagler today. He's so excited. I'm excited for him. I'm nervous about things he'll never think about, like the fact that he gets bloody noses almost every night in the middle of the night during allergy season. I'm worried he won't get enough water. I'm worried he'll miss me (probably not, but I can worry, right?)

This post is brought to you by the letter "F"

Reactions:
Today "F" stands for "Freedom"

I finally quit my morning job. I hated it. I hated everything about it. I liked it at first, but I grew to hate it. I am pretty sure the whole "independent contractor" thing is not for me. In fact, I am positive it is not. When pictured what my summer was going to be like with two jobs I started breaking out in hives. It totally took over my life, even though I really only worked it 2-3 days a week.

I will be happier and thus, my kids will be happier.

I no longer have to wait by the computer until 9:00 a.m. every morning to see if I have work or not. I can actually make PLANS in the mornings. It's a Christmas miracle.

I do still have my morning job. It's nice to have a job where the income depends on how hard I work and not how hard they work.

Moodometer

Reactions:
HAPPY: I am very happy about this weather. It's been in the upper 70s to low 80s for a few days and will be for several more. YAY.

FRUSTRATED: Maddie is going through this really annoying whiny/weepy stage. It's been going on for over a week now. At first I chalked it up to her not feeling well. Then I chalked it up to lack of sleep since she wasn't sleeping well because of her not feeling well. Now I have ran out of excuses and am calling it the "one last final attempt to send mommy to the looneybin." So far it's a huge success.

EXCITED: It's almost time for softball!! We had practice this weekend again and it was great. I'm looking forward to playing this year. I know that isn't what I said at the end of last year, but I was wrong. Relish the moment, I don't admit that I often.

SAD: It's almost the end of the school year - only 2 more weeks. Maddie's mission of craziness will probably be accomplished by the 3rd week of summer.

NERVOUS: Dylan leaves for camp tomorrow. The entire 5th grade is going to Fort Flagler for 3 days. He's never been away from me for more than 24 hours without being with family. Even when he is just gone with family he usually is ready to come home after about a day. He's such a mama's boy. I can't help that. :) He'll do fine though. He's going to be with all his friends and he'll be too busy to worry about me.

IRRITABLE: It isn't even that time of the month but it seems that everywhere I go (and even places I don't go) someone finds some way to irritate the crap out of me. You'd think with all the sunshine I'd be Little Miss Cheerful but I'm just not.

I think that about sums up my moods lately. If you don't fall into one of the above categories I can make a new one for you, just give me five minutes.
