Dylan was an early reader. He caught on quickly and soared from there. All through elementary school he was reading at least 3-5 grade levels ahead. Although he can read, he chooses not to. I've always wanted a child with a love of reading. I could go through 2-3 books a week on average. Reading is fun. Reading is entertaining. Reading is educational. For Dylan, reading is boring.
Maddie struggled with reading last year. She never caught on like Dylan did. By the end of kindergarten she could read maybe 20 sight words like "A, the, and, he, she", etc. Put them in a sentence and forget about it. She just got confused about it. Her teacher said she'd learn it in 1st grade but I had my doubts. I pictured her struggling with this for the rest of her life.
I worked on it with her over the summer, which was more of a pain for both of us than anything. She wasn't interested and I would get frustrated.
So she started 1st grade 4 weeks ago today. The other day she came home and said she was learning a lot in school. She said that her favorite time of the day was when they got to read to themselves. I was confuzzled about this statement because to the best of my knowledge, she could not read. She pulls out a book and reads the whole.damn.thing. You can imagine my jaw on the floor. She is grinning ear to ear. So she grabs another. and another. My girl can READ. Not only CAN she read, she LOVES to read. She said she would rather read than go to recess. Are you freaking kidding me???? YAYAYAYAY She will sit on the couch with a pile of books and just read them for an hour.
I gave her a book that was a tiny bit harder than the ones she had been reading. She struggled with a few words, but the best part was that on the words she struggled with, once she got to that word again she didn't even hesitate. I could not be prouder. I need to write that teacher a thank you note because whatever she is doing, she's doing right. Hopefully this love of reading stays with her forever.

12 Years
Reactions:
12 years ago today the handsomest little creature you ever saw came into my life. He weighed 8 pounds 10 ounces and had the most beautiful brown eyes you ever saw.

Today he turns 12 years old. He's growing into a man right before my eyes. I made a video tribute for him but I can't get it to upload onto you tube. I'll try a little later again. I cried when I watched it this morning. We're going to watch it tonight with our cake and ice cream. We're going to Famous Dave's for dinner - his choice of course.

Happy Birthday Dylan!!! I love you!!

Girls Night take 2
Reactions:
Saturday night was "Girls Night" at Lezli's house. It was a lot of fun. Joel dropped me off and picked me up later that night. I was pretty tired yesterday and my head throbbed from a minor head injury, lol. Other than that, I survived. There are pictures. I posted a link on my facebook page to Keri's album if you want to see them. Yes, I'm feeling rather lazy today...
Today is a Learning Improvement Day, which means my kids have no school. That means they're stuck here all day with me. It'll be like summer again only not as warm.
Tomorrow is Dylan's birthday and I have a special post for him tomorrow. :)
Happy birthday to my Grandma today!!! Love you!

Back in MY day
Reactions:
Thanks to Laura, who sent this to me today. I've seen it before, but it made me laugh today so I'm sharing it.
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill... barefoot...BOTH ways
Yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty-five, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet . If we wanted to know something,
We had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!
There was no email !! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!
Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us . As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! No where was safe!
There were no MP3 ' s or Napsters ! You wanted to steal music , you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and screw it all up!
There were no CD players ! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone ....cause that's h ow we rolled dog!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting ! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal , that's it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics ! We had the Atari 2600 ! With games like ' Space Invaders ' and 'asteroids '. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination !! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win . The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing ! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel! There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning . Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves , if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove ... Imagine that!
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

Deep breaths

I have made no secret about loving my work. I get to stay home and work and make money. What is better than that. Last year I had two part-time jobs at once and I hated it. I just got an offer today to work full-time from home from a different smaller company making the same amount with better hours. Last week I mentioned that I should probably start working full time since the kids are in school full time now. You know, start pulling my weight a little bit...lol.
I took the job. I feel good about THAT, but I still feel anxiety about quitting my present job. I haven't done it yet and every time I start to type the email I get more anxiety and ditch it. I start my new job on Monday. Can I work 65 hours a week??? Not while keeping my sanity. I promise I will quit. I swear.

Addendum to spider post
Reactions:
Alright. I've had more than enough. I gave you warning, but the king of spiders decided to make his presence known tonight and he has now been asasinated by Joel's Shoe. Sorry, but you can't say I did not warn you. Even after assasination you left blood stains and terrible memories in my kitchen, but I still don't feel guilt. You damn eight legged hairy creepy eyed creatures will continue to die at our hands whenever you come out of your hiding places.
Attention Spiders
Reactions:
This is a letter to all the spiders here in my home. I don't mind these two months or so where you take refuge in my drains and my vents and under my couch. Really, I don't. I understand the natural process and everything. However....please stay there. I don't want you on me any more than you want to be on me, so just stay in your corner and I'll stay in mine, deal? When you come out from your hiding place, I have to kill you. It's a rule. I won't feel bad about it either. However, when your legs are longer than my fingers and it takes something bigger than a shoe to kill you and I have to bury you in the back yard in a shoe box, I feel like I just broke one of the Ten Commandments and I don't need that kind of guilt in my life. So the deal is...you remain alive and hidden and I remain blissfully unaware of your existence. I'm not afraid to declare war on your gross hairy little bums so take my advice. Please. You know who I'm talking to. I don't expect you to respond either, but based on the size of some of your bad ass friends I've had to kill in the last few days, I'm thinking maybe it's a possibility.

Recall Post

Remember the last post where I was on cloud nine and giddy like a school girl that Ryan was coming to town in just 2 short days?????
scratch that.
He is sick and had to cancel.
Unfortunately, the show still goes on - just minus Ryan. So I can't get a refund. I posted the tickets everywhere I can think of and hopefully someone wants to buy them. I've had one person seriously interested....if it doesn't work out I am eating $80 and that sucks, but such is life. If I had waiting only 24 hours to buy my tickets I would still have that $80.
Just another day in paradise.

Well, it's time for yet another weekend recap. There wasn't anything too exciting this weekend. On Friday night Joel and Dylan went to the NK Vikings football game with Dan and Dennis and they all had a blast. Rachel, Marin and Quinn came and hung out with me and Maddie and we had even more fun. Rachel and I could go to a funeral and have a good time. Sort of. You know what I mean.
Saturday my stepmom took Maddie "girl shopping" cause they both love to shop. Me, not so much. Dylan went to work with my dad at the wrecking yard. He crushed cars for them and apparently did a great job. Future occupation? I hope not. Maybe until he goes to college. That's his mother speaking. I stayed at home and played Farkle until my brain died.
Joel worked a side job all weekend long and was done in time to watch the Seahawks. The kids went to church with Mam and Papa and then out to lunch for grandparents day.
Now, we're back to school. YAY The first FULL week of school. Can I get a HELL YEA.
Wednesday is the day I've been waiting for for 3 years. RYAN STAR IS COMING BACK TO SEATTLE!!!! Holy mother of God. Rachel and I are going together. Can you hear me giggling like a school girl right now? Cause I am.
Just to get remind you......

Routines!!!
Reactions:
I love routines! Now that school is back in session we're getting ourselves back into a lovely little routine. I don't think we ever got into a real set routine all summer long. This is the 3rd day back to school and already it feels like an old comfortable pair of pants I forgot I had.
It's hard to believe that 9/11 was 8 years ago. Maddie wasn't even born. Dylan remembers that day because it was his very first day of preschool. It was supposed to be a happy day but nobody was happy that day. It's a day I'll never forget, that's for sure.
Today is Friday. Kingston High School is playing North Kitsap High School tonight at NK and Joel and Dylan and Dan and Dennis are going to go watch. Should be fun for them. Rachel is coming over with the kids to hang out and watch movies. Now THAT should be fun!
Last night we had an exciting adventure (not). Maddie got home from school and Joel and I were lecturing her about eating her lunch properly (another story). As we were talking to her she somehow shoved a jewel up her nose. A tiny plastic yellow jewel. I don't know how we missed this but we did. After she did it she started freaking out of course and shoving her finger up there to get it out, which was doing more harm than good. We tried getting her to blow her nose. She sneezed a few times. We finally had to get the tweezers and dig them out. By we I mean Joel of course. I don't know what she was thinking, but clearly she was NOT. She is really embarrassed about this though.
We went to dinner with my dad and stepmom and a couple of their friends for my stepmom's birthday. It was fun. In the lobby of the restaurant they had some toys to play with that interested Maddie so I let her go play with it while I stood where I could see her but still be close to the table. When she was done she came through the doors of the lobby and let her hand linger just a second too long and her fingers got pinched in the door. Oh lordy. So I'm guessing that she's been leaving her brain at the school every day. That's all I can figure. She must be thinking so hard at school that she no longer can at home.

How was school today?
Reactions:
I wish I had a little plug I could stick in my kids brains and get a straight answer from them about this question. From both of them it was "fine." I want DETAILS. Over the course of the evening we got little bits and pieces from Dylan. Maddie, not so much. She had 3 recesses. She didn't eat much of her lunch because her sandwich was squished. She made a new friend but couldn't remember her name, she thinks maybe Sara.
Oh well, overall it seemed to have gone okay. They both hate riding the bus because on the way home they're on it for over an hour. We live 2 miles from the school. Unfortunately, I don't really have a choice because I work in the afternoons. I did promise them that on Friday's I would pick them up though since I have the day off. How generous of me, eh?
Last night Joel's parents took us to Dairy Queen to celebrate the first day of school and we ran into Maddie's teacher from last year, which she was really excited about. She loved her.
Today is my step mom's birthday and we're going out to dinner to celebrate.
It's a beautiful day today and I'm going to take a long walk after Maddie gets on the bus. Right now there are a pair of crane flies right outside on my window mating. What a beautiful sight first thing in the morning. Crane fly sex. How many google hits will I get with that pretty phrase??

FIRST DAY!!! - Edited with HAIR picture
Reactions:
First of all, yesterday Dylan had to go get his 6th grade shots. He was so nervous about that, but he did so well. He said "That's weird, it didn't hurt at all" I'm glad cause when the flu shots come out, Maddie won't be scared because Dylan wasn't.
Today was Dylan's first day of 6th grade. That's middle school. That's scary stuff. He was nervous. He couldn't sleep last night. He woke up with a stomachache and could hardly eat his breakfast. Poor kid. He looks handsome though :) I can't wait to hear how it went.
Today was Maddie's first day of 1st grade. It's her first day of ALL DAY school. She wasn't nervous, she was just psyched. This was the happiest day of her life. In fact, she bounded out of her bedroom this morning grinning ear to ear. She looked gorgeous as you can see below and then at the busstop she fell in the street and tore up her tights and skinned her knee. That is BEFORE she even got to school. *sigh* I can't wait to hear about her day too.
After they left I went grocery shopping and then went and got my hair cut. It was really long and driving me nuts so I finally went in and had them cut it off. I don't think Joel will like it because it's up above my shoulders, but at least it will be easier for me to take care of. Most days I just put it in a bun or a ponytail and pretend it doesn't exist, lol.
Tomorrow I start back on my walking schedule. As soon as Maddie gets on the bus - I'm gone. I'm hoping to walk 4-5 miles a day 5 days a week. It only takes about an hour to do that so if I have errands to run, I still have 3 more hours left in my day before work to do that. :)

Okay, okay, here's the hair picture. It's a different one than the one I put on Facebook. It's shorter than I intended, but it's really exactly what I wanted. My hair was way down the middle of my back before.

Call it what you want
Reactions:
We had a pretty good weekend.
Friday night was of course movie night, but the two movies we had wanted to see were not in at Hollywood, so we opted for a 3rd movie, which nobody really wanted to see anyway. We ended up not watching it, which was for the better since after the kids took their showers and stuff it ended up being after 7:00 and I wanted the kids in bed earlier than usual since I'm trying to get them back on a school schedule and also they had to get up early the next day.
Saturday at 8:00 my dad and Cheryll picked up the kids. They were taking them for the day over the Puyallup and Tacoma to do some stuff. I worked all morning (why not) and after I got off at 12:00 Joel and I went to his parents so I could help her with her computer. We then went and did a little grocery shopping and then as soon as we got home, the kids got home. Turns out they were going to just take them to their house and feed them dinner but Maddie wanted to come home - she missed mama. That's funny because it's usually the opposite, Dylan will be the one who wants to come home because he missed mama. Turns out, she didn't miss me...she missed the Sims game. She's an addict. She played it for 2 hours after she got home. She loves to play it but she doesn't quite know how to do everything, in fact several of her Sims died Saturday night because she forgot to feed them or they burned up in a fire she didn't extinguish. I came at one point to see how she was doing and all her people were passed out on the lawn. She ended up getting grounded from it yesterday because she got too frustrated with it, so I told her it's time for a Sims Vacation.
Yesterday Joel took the kids shoe and clothes shopping (I didn't have to go!!!). He bought them each a pair of tennis shoes for PE/school and 2 pairs of pants each. Maddie's in a tough stage because the 6/6X are way too small and the 7's are too long. Oh well, she's going to have to step on her pants for awhile. Joel BBQd some steaks for us last night and they were good. Even Maddie loved it even though she complained all day about steak.
Two more days until school starts!!! Who's excited??? THIS MOM

This isn't supposed to happen
Reactions:
Once upon a time there was a girl who had a little boy and he was adorable and fun and young and loved motorcycles and tractors and played with his mama's hair when he was falling asleep. He never said "mama" or "mommy", it was always "mom." He had a "old soul" as people liked to call it because he talked like a grown up most of the time, even though his mom knew better. He was a baby. He was her baby. That boy grew up. That boy is starting middle school next week. That boy is my son.
Last night we had the middle school orientation. For two weeks I've lost sleep worrying about my little boy in that big middle school. I've worried about him not being able to find classes or open his locker or find his friends or get his lunch. I've worried until my head fell off.
Orientation went better than okay. Other than being very chaotic and stressful, we got his schedule, met his teachers, saw his classrooms, etc. We found out which friends he had in his classes and which he did not. We saw kids he had not seen since preschool (and of course did not remember, but I did!) I'm very pleased with his teachers, I think they're going to be really good for him. He's pleased with his schedule of classes (as am I). I see this year as being a really good one for him. I am almost 100% relieved of my worry (notice I said almost).
Maddie had her 1st grade orientation the same night, which I could not attend. I felt Dylan's was way more important (which it was). Mam took her and apparently Ms. Social Butterfly had a great time - she saw lots of friends and loved her teacher and her classroom, so I am very pleased.
Only FIVE more days until school and I CAN'T WAIT!!!! I have some major plans for while they're at school. MAJOR.
I'm not going to sugar coat this next news....I'm very saddened about Jeff being kicked off Big Brother. Up until yesterday, this was by far the best season yet. Out of 11 seasons, this one had the best cast, the best drama, the best everything. Then they had to go and let my Jeffrey go. Now, it's not technically the producers fault, but if they loved him as much as I did they would have done something to save him.....boo to them. Now, if that nasty natalie wins (i can't even wast a shift key on her stupid name) I will probably throw up my dinner. blech. Michele deserves to win this game - in fact, she's the only one left in the house who does. GO MICHELE!
Have a great weekened. I'll be spending mine working because it's a holiday weekend and I get extra!!! Yay ME!

School stuff
Reactions:
Yesterday they posted the class lists outside Maddie's school so we went to check it out. Out of the 4 first grade teachers they have there was only 1 she didn't want and it wasn't a personal thing, just because she couldn't pronounce her name well. Guess who she got?? She wasn't that disappointed, especially when she saw that she had lots of friends in her class including her best friend Laila. Now she's really excited for school. Unfortunately her orientation is tomorrow night and so is Dylan's....at the exact same time. It's very important that Joel and I both be there for Dylan's middle school orientation so I enlisted Mam to take Maddie to hers. Mostly her orientation is meeting the teacher, seeing the classroom, seeing your classmates and dropping off your school supplies. Dylan's is a whole lot more than that. The school system really needs to get a little better organized apparently.
